Things to Buy Duty-Free at the Airport

Things to Buy Duty-Free at the Airport

A perfect guide – “Things to Buy Duty-Free at the Airport”

If you’ve ever flown into an international flight or walked through an international terminal, you’ve most likely seen or noticed that brightly lit area of “duty-free shop” that looks like a mini shopping mall, and now the question that arises here is what the heck is this duty-free shop and why are we talking about this??!!

Let’s start with the answer – a duty-free shop is basically a shop at the airport that sells products for which ‘duty’ aka the local import taxes or fees slapped on goods by government bodies, is not included. Yes, you’ve read that right, a shop that basically is selling products without any taxes, particularly on international terminals.

And now the answer to the remaining question is that we are talking about this, because what is better than saving some bucks even in the last moments of your journey. You are going to your home after an international trip, and at the airport, you bought some tax-free goods/gifts that are cheaper compared to local/regional prices, that sounds like a happy ending for sure.

Normally this duty-free shop allows travelers to save money on fragrances, cosmetics, luxury items, etc and what you have to do is after filling your bucket with these duty-free products, at the cash counter, the cashier will ask you to show your boarding pass to verify that you are traveling out of the country and done!! You’ve saved those extra bucks on your favorite chocolates (thank me later).

And then your question should be, how much am I saving while shopping from these duty-free shops at the airport?

The answer precisely depends on the country you are in, the products you are purchasing, and the currency exchange rate. Let’s have a look at products that you can buy from a duty-free shop;

CADBURY

Things that start with sweets, end with more sweets (that’s my philosophy), Cadbury/chocolates are a prime duty-free product that you should not miss while traveling internationally (forgetting it is a sin).

COSMETICS AND FRAGRANCES

Yes, they are there, check them out, you can grab some good deals on your favorite perfume or cosmetic at a duty-free shop.

Above mentioned products are just some examples to give you an idea about duty-free shopping at the terminal/airport.

However, the one thing that you should remember is that this whole idea of saving some bucks through a duty-free shop strictly depends on the location you are in and the product you are purchasing.

Now there are some things that you should know about the duty-free shopping (so you can’t blame me later);

While duty-free shopping is looking like a great, snatch it right now kind of deal, the truth is everything is not as good as it looks, these duty-free shops do not price the items/products simply by removing the taxes, it is not that simple, they have to price it to be reasonably competitive of the local area, and in addition of that they have to bear the usual retail and the royal stiff of paying to the airport, so in conclusion, the prices of products can still be high.

The electronics and watches, often are available at a duty-free shop, but remember, no matter where you are, the electronics are almost always cheaper online/offline than any duty-free shop.

Now remember the key to duty-free shopping is knowing the prices of the product at different online websites or offline locations, so you actually can grab some very good deals at a duty-free shop.

Here are some popular products to buy from duty-free shops of some major foreign airports;

  • Fragrance – Madrid, Porto, London
  • Cosmetics – London, Dubai, Vienna
