Northern Railways Clear Last Hurdle on Katra-Banihal Line

   

SRINAGAR: Northern Railways has reached a big milestone on probably the most difficult part with the breakthrough of a 3.2-km-long single-tube tunnel situated at Gunni-Sherwad within the Katra-Reasi part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Hyperlink Mission, high officers mentioned on Wednesday.

A high Northern Railway official mentioned that beneath the USBRL challenge, a key milestone had been achieved with the breakthrough of the 3209-meter-long Tunnel-1 constructed by Konkan Railway Company Restricted for Northern Railway between Katra-Reasi stations.

With this breakthrough of Tunnel-1, Railways accomplished all of the tunnels on the 111-kilometer-long Katra-Banihal railway line, the official mentioned that work was held up on this significant tunnel for over three years since 2017.

“The liner work and stoppages of water seepages in Tunnel-1 had been probably the most difficult duties. The numerous Himalayan geology and deep riverine gorges within the part posed the hardest problem for finishing the tunnel work,” the official added.

Railway Board Member (Infrastructure) Roop Narayan Sunkar mentioned, “We needed to work on 111 kilometres, with 97 kilometres devoted to tunnelling. The work on the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Ajni Bridge, the primary cable-stayed rail bridge within the Katra-Banihal part, has been accomplished.”

“The work on Tunnel-1 was probably the most difficult attributable to its topography. Lastly, a breakthrough has been achieved,” he mentioned. (KNO)
